A Harrowing Tale

Story Time
So I hit this funny little snafu the other week. I doubt many of you will know this, but I do have one book that was not indie published. What?? Don’t get too excited. Back in 2017, the Kindle Scout program was still running. Authors could submit their books, readers would read a sample chapter of those books, and if they liked them, they could vote for them to be published through Kindle Press. Basically, Kindle Press was the ebook publishing house of Amazon. The idea was that indie authors could get a little help from Kindle Press for marketing and whatnot.
So I did it. Keeping Kinley was selected and then published through them. The consequence of this was that it did sell a little more than my previous book, but I also made a lower royalty rate. All in all, having my book published through them was a net gain. However, the one big negative was that I didn’t have the ability to update the ebook files.
But Annette, why would you need to update them?
Back matter.
See, when it was published, it was my most recently written book and I didn’t have another book to link it to in the back matter except for Just Ella. That was mostly fine, since Keeping Kinley was the last in the Dalthia series—but then I wrote To Betray a King. And while it’s part of the Shattered Tales series, it also directly ties into my Dalthia series. However, I couldn’t update my Kinley back matter to say, “hey, you should read this book next.” My reading funnel (the path I suggest readers take from book to book) was broken. But still, I left it alone.
Until a couple weeks ago. I decided it was time to request a rights reversion. I got a response saying they’d get the process going. Great. I wasn’t in a rush. I’d been not worried about this for nine years. A few weeks or even months wasn’t going to make a difference. But then, as I was updating a different book’s back matter, I went to get a link to Keeping Kinley and noticed that THE EBOOK WAS GONE FROM AMAZON.
Poof. Just…not there.
I quickly wrote to the guy and said, hey, I noticed my book’s been UNPUBLISHED without my knowledge. How’s that rights reversion going?
He said they were working on it and to hang tight.
Oh, sure, I’ll just chill while my book is lost in the ether…
Luckily, it only took a couple days before they got me my official rights reversion letter, and by that time, I had my newly updated ebook of Keeping Kinley locked and loaded, and ready to hit publish.
So yes, they gave me a minor heart attack, but it ended happily ever after, and all is right with the world again!
